In 1937, Frank and Josephine Duveneck opened the West's first hostel at their 1600-acre ranch in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in Los Altos Hills. Today, HI-Hidden Villa is an actual working farm with farm animals, oak-studded grasslands, organic gardens and Adobe Creek's woodland watershed.
During the summer, the Hidden Villa Environmental Education Program (www.hiddenvilla.org) runs a multicultural children's camp (the hostel is closed during this period). There are more than seven miles of trails for guests to roam in the hills behind the hostel. San Francisco, San Jose, Stanford University and "Silicon Valley" are all close by. For the young at heart, Great America amusement park is just 12 miles away.
