Call for Entries: IOU Respect 2013

Calling all 18-23 year-olds passionate about becoming global citizens of peace! Hostelling International is seeking applicants for the 8th annual IOU Respect program, which runs from August 16-30 in Berlin, Germany. Young adults from Lebanon, Germany, Tunisia, Egypt, France, and the United States are encouraged to apply for this once-in-a-lifetime international cultural exchange. During the two-week program, participants will take part in educational workshops, explore the city of Berlin, and discuss some of the most pressing issues in today's world, while bridging cultural gaps and connecting with peers of varied backgrounds.

The IOU Respect program was created in the tragic aftermath of 9/11 as representatives from the German, Canadian, and U.S. Hostelling International associations acknowledged the need to implement HI's mission of building peace by bringing people together. They decided the best way to bridge the gap between Western and Middle Eastern countries was through a multi-cultural exchange program. This program would further the worldwide campaign, supported by HI, known as "Youth Hostelling for Peace and International Understanding." Today, the IOU Respect program has become one of the major ways in which Hostelling International strives to build a better world through hostelling.

This year's IOU Respect program is hosted by the German Hostelling Association and is geared towards furthering the intercultural communication skills of participants, fostering action for constructive intercultural exchange, and promoting an open-minded attitude. While in Germany, Hostelling International covers all costs, including meals and accommodation. Participants must cover the cost of their transportation to Berlin; scholarships may be available through your home country's hostelling association.

Eligible participants are 18-23 years old, fluent in English, and citizens of Egypt, Germany, France, Lebanon, Tunisia, or the U.S. Current HI employees and former HI exchange program participants are not eligible. Applicants will be chosen based on how well they demonstrate their values of tolerance, respect, and intercultural education through their application and reference form.
