Any talent or interest you have, we can use! HI-San Francisco-Downtown seeks volunteers to staff our information center, conduct walking and hiking tours of the city and area, and lead groups of hostellers to local events. We are also looking for returning travelers to share their knowledge of a particular aspect of travel in travel seminars.
We are flexible in scheduling and need volunteers both during the day and in the evening, seven days a week. This is a great opportunity to meet travelers from around the world, practice language skills, and share your knowledge and appreciation for this dynamic community.

Volunteers with a good working knowledge of the Bay Area are needed seven days a week to staff the hostel's information desk. We are always searching for enthusiastic people of all ages to plan and lead walking tours of San Francisco neighborhoods, take hostellers to sports and cultural activities and give evening orientations in the hostel.

American Youth Hostels is a non-profit organization founded in 1933 that provides budget accommodations and educational programs for travelers of all ages. American Youth Hostels, Inc., is affiliated with the International Youth Hostel Federation, which operates under the trademark Hostelling International. At each of the more than 5,000 hostels worldwide, you will find clean, safe dormitory-style sleeping rooms as well as common areas designated for cooking, dining, reading and gatherings of all kinds. Designed to bring people together, hostels have been likened to a miniature United Nations, promoting world peace one person at a time.
To enable all, but especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. Stressing the ideals of world peace, anti-discrimination and cultural exchange, Hostelling International provides budget accommodations and volunteer programs to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of this organization. Their commitment, enthusiasm and talents are invaluable contributions to our existence. As a volunteer, you'll provide a much-needed resource of information and hospitality to travelers trying to make the most of their experience here. It is an opportunity to strengthen cross-cultural understanding and socially aware travel. We also count on volunteers to uphold the traditions, customs and spirit of hostelling. The only qualification you need is a willingness to take an enthusiastic approach to sharing your knowledge of the Bay Area's history and culture with a diverse group of people.
EVENTS, such as street fairs, museums, and community services, are just a few of the many low-cost, fun and informative events happening in the Bay Area that hostellers want to experience. However, for a foreign traveler, knowing about them or how to get to them can be difficult. That's where you come in! Your involvement in these and the other events that take place in the hostel is an excellent way for volunteers and hostellers to experience and learn about our city and our planet together.
HIKES AND WALKING TOURS can offer hostellers a chance to understand and appreciate the diversity and rich history of the Bay Area's less publicized neighborhoods and attractions through the eyes of a local resident: YOU!
INFORMATION DESK provides help and information to hostellers regarding local transportation or services; tips on dining or entertainment; etc.
