Stay overnight at either the Marin Headlands Hostel, or the Point Reyes Hostel -- they're both about a 20-minute drive from Bolinas.

Bolinas, California is a faraway place. Technically, it's only 25 miles from the Marin Headlands Hostel and 19 miles from the Point Reyes Hostel, but it's as far away from the rest of Marin County as you can get. This tiny, unincorporated town without a mayor or a city hall maintains such an indie, insular culture, and an obvious aversion to non-native species, that it's literally off-the-map.

The legacy of hostelling in Northern California is thriving in Point Reyes, the location of HI-USA Golden Gate Council's oldest hostel. Opened in 1972 as the Laguna Ranch Hostel, the Point Reyes Hostel is proud to celebrate 40 years of welcoming visitors to the Point Reyes National Seashore.

On Saturday, September 8, the park celebrates its 50th anniversary with a reception and oak-planting ceremony at the Bear Valley Visitor Center.

Point Reyes Trails Challenge

Point Reyes National Seashore is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a Trails Challenge fundraiser! The Point Reyes National Seashore Association, the park's nonprofit partner, and the National Park Service are establishing a Trails Trust for the well-loved trails and paths of Point Reyes that need to be updated and maintained. In honor of the park's birthday, and to kickstart trail renovations, the Trails Challenge -- which challenges hikers and equestrians to explore all 150 miles of trails -- is a benefit for the Trails Trust.
