Imagine a program that introduces inner-city youth to the excitement and wonder of the natural world. Wildlife, tidepools, hiking trails, native plants and star-filled skies are all part of the adventure. For many of our participants, the program is a first-time experience in the outdoors.
This is the Hostel Adventure Program, serving economically and educationally disadvantaged Bay Area youth, ages eight through eighteen. The program supplements and enhances school curricula by tailoring activities to teacher and student needs. Program activities emphasize:
Since 1986, the Hostel Adventure Program has offered schools and community agencies day and overnight trips to Bay Area hostels. These trips introduce over 1,000 children each year to the wonders of nature and the experience of hostelling.
Using a curriculum that takes advantage of the hostels’ unique coastal settings, participants study and explore the environment. Through investigation of natural habitats and hands-on activities and discussions, youth develop:

An overnight stay at a hostel can be a transforming experience for many children. Participants from diverse backgrounds must work together to create a successful Hostel Adventure experience. They also have the opportunity to develop an understanding of and appreciation for cultural differences through interaction with other guests from around the world.
Staying at a hostel is an experience in community living. Kitchen facilities and living areas are shared by all hostel guests, and Hostel Adventure Program participants are encouraged to be aware of and sensitive to the needs of others.
The Hostel Adventure Program:
Single day or overnight trips (one to three nights) are available year round.
Food and transportation to and from the hostel are the responsibility of the group. There is public transportation available to the Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel.
Reservations for hostel overnights are separate from HAP arrangements and are the responsibility of the group. Please call the hostel of your choice once HAP arrangements have been made.
HAP accommodates special groups with developmental, physical or learning disabilities.

Financial assistance is available for qualifying individuals or groups. These scholarships, known as "Hostelships," help defray overnight costs only.
Hostels provide cost-effective accommodations in unique and beautiful settings. They offer a comfortable atmosphere for people of all ages and backgrounds to interact in a spirit of cooperation and congeniality. Many northern California hostels are on state or national park land and provide immediate access to outdoor recreation areas.
